Installed and tested by Paul Bakes as part of the Australian team September 2008

Background

The Australian medical team identified the need for basic network (LAN) functionality in the hospital after one of their regular visits in 2007. They reported the benefits for Heal Africa administration if there was sharing and central storage of relevant hospital data. David Kelly, as part of his audit of administrative functions within the hospital, also identified a similar need. There is already …

Below is an email correspondance between Erik Jerde, Eric Nguyen, and Melissa Ho regarding the state of ICT at the HEAL hospital, conducted in February 2008. The messages run from top to bottom, with consecutive responses appearing below.

Hi Eric, I'm working with Steve Conrad on the Heal Africa IT trip coming up soon. I'm pretty much the technical lead on the trip. I wanted to touch base with you on a few items that hopefully you can provide me with good information on.

This is a place for rough notes on EMR (Electronic Medical Record) systems. More comprehensive systems sometimes refer to themselves as Hospital Management Systems. These were all researched to see where they might fit in HEAL's ICT plan, explained on the HospitalManagementSystems page.

Our longest link is 382km, between a couple of mountains in Venezuela.
Basically - the wireless protocol can go about 70km without a problem,
after which the throughput starts dropping off unless you adjust the

As we note on the ICT Home page, “the installation of a Hospital Management System is a large project that has yet to get off the ground. There are multiple approaches to take, depending on how ambitious we want to be, feature-wise. Short-term needs would also be addressed by a very different system than Long-term ones.”

Welcome to the HealAfrica IT Planning wiki. At the moment, we are collecting information to help us evaluate solutions to put in place in Goma and brainstorming potential projects.

Bring higher-bandwidth connection to HA in Goma

We have a Terracom card (Operating through RwandaTel) that Bridget left here for use at the hospital. She says that it is paid up for two years, starting on 8/2007. We've started using it as the connection for a separate network in the hospital.

“Before you go, we can check in with Bizi to find out what parts he
needs for the various computers. I know that he needs power supplies
for 3 HP desktop computers (HP d530sff). We also need several 256 MB
PC2100 memory modules. And we do need the laptop hard drives as well.
I am not sure if Eric or Melissa will be down here before you go, but
we should keep a list on the wiki of parts t…
